Unit 25 home work

The extract I am analysing is about an LGBT+  activist and he shows three points as to why you should become an ally to the LGBT community and help the activists. The video appeals to its target audience through its colours which use a lot of feminine colours. This relates to the the femininity of gay culture and also is used to keep the attention of the young teens that this is also target to as it is a video that sets out to teach the viewers about the homophobia still present in the modern day. So it would need to keep the younger viewers interested and to focus their attention on the video. This is also shown through a scene in which two people talk and they focus is sent straight to both of the peoples mouths. This helps understand that the subject the presenter is talking about now is about communication and voicing your concerns while it al so keeps the attention of the younger audience with the quack zoom in and split focus.  The target audience of the video consists mostly of black teen LGBT members and it appeals to them as it shows videos and images of pride events in predominately black places. This would inspire young black teens to become ally’s to the LGBT community. This is also enhanced through the main presenter,  Darkwah kyei-darkwah who is a openly gay black male who is shown wearing black clothing such as a drag. This is to enhance the idea that he is a normal person and that he wears and does the something's that any other person would do. Ashwell as that he also tells us what he loves doing which is writing poems. Suggesting that they were trying to make him seem related and profession due to the fact he was speaking on behalf of the community. However the video also Targets other ethnic groups as the video not only tries to convince closeted black teens as well as try to teach the other ethnic and sexuality viewers about how difficult it is to be LGBT in a black neighbourhood. This is in order to spread awareness for Black LGBT+ people so that more straight people and people from the LGBT community can attend more prides and be as an ally they can be.

To further my analysis the use of quick editing that is very hyper appeals to the younger generation as it has a lot of quick cuts to locations and people who are mostly gay black men at pride, this enhances the subject matter that was being spoken at the time. It also has a lot of  filters and big writing to enhance the meaning of the video and also relate to the LGBT groups. As I have said before it also keeps younger audiences attention on the video as so they don't get bored of the subject. There were no transitions in the video to go to the next scene instead they were just cuts from shot to shot. However, the editors used filters to enhance what the presenter was saying. For example, when the presenter started taking about how homophobia is just as bad today as it was when the first riots broke out. The filter became an old film reel with dust on that was mainly used during those times. This was used to help the audience that were uneducated about the first riots understand how long ago it was, suggesting that it has been going on for way too long. Also a small detail is that during the video the class MTV logo was given a redesign that represent the flag for pride, showing the audience what side they were fighting for.

The sound design on the video is very minimal and instead consists of the presenter talking and some non diegetic background music. While this can be seen as lazy as it adds nothing to the video it could also be seen as the editor putting more enthesis on the topic as it is much more serious than celebrity drama, meaning that random sound effects could ruin the video and the message may not get sent across correctly. With this we can see how by only using quiet background music contrasted with the loud and energetic presenter it allows it to sound a lot more professional which could make people more interested in watching the video.

As for clothing most of the extras where normal clothes as they are inside a studio filming small clips that would be used for simple messages. However the contrast of the costume design from the extras to the presenter make him stand out a lot more as his cloths are much more exaggerated with him wearing a lot of feminine jewellery and clothes. This is furthered as when we are sent to the pride we are shown a lot more exaggerated characters that are representing the LGBT community. The bright costume design presented with their facial expressions presents them as sympathetic as we get to see how happy they are as people when they are aloud to do what they want. This is contrasted by the dull and unhappy look we are seen when it transition's to countries that do not allow LGBT communities. This then creates sympathy for the members who live in other countries and that are not allowed to share their lifestyle they can in other places. Making the audience want to help out them people. This also correlates to the first point made, which was that it is hard to come out in mostly black neighbourhoods as the countries we see are mostly ethnic and multi cultural. This could be used to make them people seem relatable to people who are lucky and live in the UK or USA which are accepting of the community.

Overall this video uses manly miser-en-scene elements to provide information to people and to also try to bring acceptance to this subject.
